'Making and marking progress' is a programme of material, devised by Asset Languages and CILT on behalf of the government, to provide assessment support for primary languages. It is designed to complement any scheme of work already used by teachers and is suitable for use with any language.
Therese Comfort, Head of Primary at CILT, commented. "Identifying progression in language learning is one of the most challenging things for all teachers. 'Making and marking progress' will help practitioners reach a shared understanding of what progression looks like in the primary classroom."
'Making and marking progress' demonstrates how teaching activities - some of which have been adapted from the QCA Scheme of Work for KS2 - link with the Languages Ladder and the outcomes and learning objectives of the KS2 Framework for Languages, helping teachers plan for progression.
A new pack of materials has been published this spring which contains materials mapped to Years 3 and 4 of the Framework, and grades 1 and 2 of the Languages Ladder.
Hard copies of this pack will be distributed to all primary schools and primary language advisors by the end of March 2010.
To look at the material online, here is a pdf of the 'Making and marking progress' Year 3 and 4 assessment support pack:
Within the Making and marking progress pack, there are pages where teachers record evidence of achievement by children during one of the teaching activities. There is also a blank assessment opportunity template for teachers to use with their own activities. These 'assessment opportunity' pages are designed to be photocopiable and are available below:
Further material, including assessment support mapped to Years 5 and 6 of the Framework, will be published in 2011.
The powerpoint presentation given by Vivienne May, Asset Qualification Group Manager and co-author of Making and marking progress, at the Primary Languages Show is available below. To download the powerpoint and accompanying notes, which can be adapted to your local needs, right click on the link and save it to your own computer.
We hope you will find this pack of assessment support helpful. We look forward to receiving feedback on your experience of using it in the classroom. Please email your feedback to us, using the form below, at primaryprogress@ocr.org.uk.
